The Current Opioid Epidemic
The Extent Of The Problem The current opioid epidemic has caused hardship nationally and in Illinois. More than 450,000 Americans have died of opioid-related overdoses since 1999. (1) Illinois lost nearly six people a day to opioid overdose in 2018* when there were 2,167 opioid-overdose related deaths in the state. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that for every opioid-related death there are 130 individuals with an opioid use disorder (OUD). This would mean that in 2018 there were approximately 259,000 Illinois residents with an opiate use disorder, about 2.6 percent of the 18 and older adult population of the state. (2) The COVID 19 pandemic has made the problem worse resulting in increased opioid abuse and death in Illinois and nationally. *2018 is the last year for which data is available |
